Directions to College
Address: Exeter College, Turl Street, Oxford
Postcode: OX1 3DP
Many Oxford streets are pedestrianised and hard to navigate; a satnav may lead you astray.
On the first day of term, you can park your car for a short while to offload luggage. Please go to the Porters’ Lodge at the front door of College to ask for a Turl Street parking permit.
From the North
Coming in toward Oxford from the A34, come off at the North Oxford junction, following the signs to central Oxford. Pass the Park & Ride on your left and, at the big roundabout, bear left onto the A40 (toward London). After a short time you hit another roundabout. Turn right here onto Banbury Road. Go almost to the end of the road, and turn left onto Parks Road at the traffic lights (after passing Bardwell Road and Norham Road on the left). Then see the directions below.
From the South and West
You will either be coming in from the South on the A34, where you should come off at the Botley Junction (signposted A420), or from the West on the A420, which joins the roundabout at this junction. You should then travel towards central Oxford on Botley Road, passing the railway station on the left. Coming into central Oxford, stay in the left-hand lane, and continue straight on, following the road round to the left. At the traffic lights that follow, turn right onto Beaumont Street. At the end of this road, turn left and then keep in the right-hand lane so that you take the right fork onto Banbury Road. Go up Banbury Road, and after the pedestrian traffic lights, take the right turn at the next traffic lights down Parks Road. Then see the directions below.
From the East
Coming toward Oxford on the A40 from London, go straight over the roundabout that joins the ring road, towards central Oxford on London Road. London Road turns into Headington Road, which turns into St. Clement’s. You then reach Magdalen roundabout (the Plain), where you should bear right onto the High Street. After going over Magdalen Bridge, turn right at the traffic lights onto Longwall Street. This turns into Cross Road, which then swings round to the right into South Parks Road. At the end of South Parks Road, turn left into Parks Road and see the directions below.
From Parks Road
Continue all the way down until you reach a crossroads, at which you should turn right onto Broad Street. After about 100 yards, turn left onto Turl Street; Exeter is the first college on the left. As you might expect, with 100 or so Freshers all arriving on the same day, and with Turl Street not being the widest street in the world, parking may well turn out to be a nightmare. There is parking also available on Broad Street, though when you are carrying a large crate of books you will notice even the slight increase in parking distance. There is no solution to this problem; we just thought you ought to be warned. If you have any questions about what time to arrive, please contact one of the Freshers’ Reps. For those students who are not being dropped off by car, the coach and train stations are within walking distance. The train station is roughly a 15-minute walk, so a taxi may be required for heavy luggage! International students will most likely be arriving via London airports, which run coach services to Oxford. For example, the Oxford Express from Heathrow takes only 50 minutes and leaves every 20 minutes; ask the driver to stop on the High Street. To reach College from the High Street, turn down the narrow road (Turl Street) between the Mitre pub and Lincoln College’s library, which looks like a church. If you need help carrying your stuff, or you get lost, ring one of the Freshers’ Reps and we’ll spring to your rescue.
Students with cars
Students are advised to not bring their car to Oxford on account of the one-way system in Oxford and the lack of parking space, particularly on College sites. Walking and cycling are more effective modes of transport.
