The Green Page
Here’s where you can find the latest green news, information on recycling within the College and tips to reduce your carbon footprint.
Recycling
Recycling at Exeter has undergone a massive change over the last year. Over the Christmas 08-09 vacation the College changed from using the Council’s recycling collection scheme to an outside company called Grundon. This meant that rather than needing to separate out paper, plastic and cans for example, they could now all be collected together.
Over the following Easter holiday, the JCR bought a separate mixed recycling bin for each of its members. These bins are emptied by the scouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while the general rubbish bins are emptied on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The idea behind this is to allow you lot to experience the smug satisfaction of recycling without leaving the comfort of your own room and thus promote recycling within the College. The materials you can recycle in these bins are:
- Paper
- Cardboard
- Plastics
- Packaging
- Plastic Packaging
- Aluminium Cans
- Steel Cans
- Plastic Cups
- Plastic Bottles
However, the scouts will NOT collect glass from either your general rubbish or mixed recycling bins. You will have to recycle this yourself in the containers behind the Chapel.
As well as this, there are a number of other recycling points around the college. You can recycle cans in the bar and in the JCR there are ink cartridges, batteries, glass, paper and food / drinks can recycling facilities. Also, there is a plastic bag re-use facility in the JCR. Here you will find a plastic box with some plastic bags in. If you are going out shopping, please take a few of these with you and return them when you get back. If you have any bags you don't want, please put them in the box.
If you’re living in Stapes, the bins for general waste and recycling are in the alley between Stapes Annexe and Stapes. There is battery recycling in the reception of Stapes and plastic bag re-use facilities in both kitchens. Those living in the two houses at 228 and 230 Iffley Road and in the Annexe are encouraged to make as much use of the Stapes facilities as possible.
