Exeter Ski & Snowboarding Club
Last Easter, the Exeter College Ski trip was as popular as ever, with over 30 of us heading out to the ski resort of Tignes 2100, all looking for a great time. With some people opting for lessons to get them started and others heading straight for the treacherous moguls, the trip was a brilliant chance for people to spend their days as they liked, with a mixture of skiing with friends and mixing with other people of a similar standard.
A typical day on the slopes involved going out after breakfast to test out some runs, with largely differing speeds according to the various exploits of the night before. After a morning's skiing and boarding, everyone met for lunch in a designated restaurant to catch up with the morning’s stories. Then it was time for the afternoon session, with many of us exploring the other runs around the area, and with Val d'Isère so close and 300 km of pistes we were spoiled for choice!
After a vin chaud and a catch up in one of the bars down by the hotel, we all had time to kick back and get some food in preparation for the night ahead. One cannot forget to mention the boozy nights out exploring the bar and clubs of Tignes, there was always something planned at the different bars. One night we even ventured in Val d'Isère for a bar crawl that somehow involved naked fives. Of course taking the legendary Exeter bops to the slopes, we all dressed in beach wear for our final night out, where we had a hilarious award ceremony where awards included 'Best Tan Line' and 'All talk no trousers'. The best night of the trip was of course was the Toboggan/BBQ night. Tobogganing down a red slope in the dark into a genuine little French village, Tignes-les-Brévières where a BBQ on the snow awaited us outside a pub reserved just for us. With the pub packed with Exonians, the night soon took a turn for the raucous as the lights went down and the music went up, with all of us dancing on the tables in full ski gear.
The novelty skiing didn't stop there, as the last day heralded the EXSSC naked ski! After a week of playing hard both on and off the slopes, everyone was exhausted yet delighted to have spent such a great time with their friends doing something completely different to normal life at Oxford, and having had the chance to mix with so many different years. This trip was definitely one of the highlights of the College calendar.
